Heart Care
The human heart is a powerful pump like organ. You can say, it is a bunch of various special muscles that is having size of your fist. The organ circulates the blood to and from body’s millions of cells, tissues, organs and systems. Normally, an adult heart pumps 5 liters of blood re-circulated continuously throughout the life.
The heart pushes the blood into tubes called as arteries and into more tiny cubes called as capillaries. Finally, the blood goes into tissue or organs and comes back through the veins. The whole cycle takes about one minute, within which, the blood brings oxygen and nutrients to the cells, organs, tissues, bones and muscles.
In Ayurveda, heart is called as ‘hridaya’. This means everything. The main seat of the soul is considered in the heart. All the bodily minute channels depend on the heart. This is also one of the three vital organ of the body, hitting on which, even death may occur.
Human heart carries many wonders. Here are few of them…
- Heart starts beating before the birth and keeps on beating till death.
- Heart beats one hundred thousand times a day making this 35 millions times in a year and so on and on…
- Heart circulates the blood of the body (which is 5 liter approximately) thrice a minute.
- The heart muscles are the only muscles that do not take rest through out their life.
- Everyday, our blood travels approximately 19000 Km. This is all due to hearth. This distance is four times distance across the USA from coast to coast.
- One can imagine the force of the heart. The pumping capacity of the heart is tremendous. If the main artery is cut, the blood can squirt upside as high as 30 feet.
Above facts give an idea, how important heart is for human body. If the heart is kept healthy, this results into overall health of the body. Ayurveda states that certain rules and regulations are to be flowed to make the heart healthy and happy.
How Does The Heart Work?
The heart and blood vessels are essentially a transportation system that supplies all the cells of the body, delivering essential materials and carrying away waste products. Using blood as the vehicle, the system carries nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, fats, and many other substances required for the body to function.
Oxygen-poor blood travels through the veins to the right side of the heart. The right side pumps blood to the lungs, where the blood picks up oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide (which is excreted from the body when you exhale). The newly oxygenated blood then travels back to the left side of the heart, which pumps blood out through the aorta, the body’s largest blood vessel, to the rest of the body. The aorta branches off into smaller arteries, which supply smaller and smaller parts of the body as the arteries themselves decrease in size.
Of course, the heart muscle also requires oxygen and nutrients in order to do its job. Surprisingly, the heart does not use the blood that pumps through it as the source of oxygen and nutrients. Just like every other muscle in the body, the heart gets its blood supply through the coronary arteries, which are the first branches off the aorta.
What Is Heart Disease?
Heart disease is one of the biggest killers with both women and men. A recent study was done and the American Heart Association said that around 70% of the US now has problems that are mild related to heart disease. In America, around every 34 seconds, there is at least one person that dies of a heart attack or either heart disease. These statistics the study and the American Heart Association found, researchers believe can be reduced with some modifications in lifestyle for those most at risk. Diet and exercise can make a large difference in whether an individual’s medical condition.
Heart disease affects millions of people yearly and while it is often believed that it is a disease more prevalent in men than women. In reality it is known as the silent killer of women and is the leading cause of death. This is because women often are not diagnosed with this medical condition and do not get the proper treatment. There are numerous factors that can cause heart disease; it can be caused by plaque buildup in the arteries, while another type can be caused by existing diseases of the organs or certain viral infections. Heart disease is a serious condition that left untreated or the patient not following the treatment plan can have a heart attack.
Coronary artery disease is caused by a buildup of plaque caused by high cholesterol and is also known as hardening of the arteries. The plaque builds up in the arteries and hardens, which then restricts the amount of proper blood flow to the heart, making the heart work harder. Coronary heart disease is similar to coronary artery disease, but occurs in the coronary artery leading to the heart. Then there is cardiomyophathy, which can be in one of two forms, it can be primary or secondary. This means that the heart disease can be the result of another factor like diseases that affect the organs, like diabetes, or it can be caused by specific types of viruses. When this type of heart disease is a primary factor it occurs due to congenital heart defects, high blood pressure or heart valve disease. No matter what causes heart disease it needs to be diagnosed and the patient will need to follow the treatment plan. This treatment plan will include exercise, a restricted salt free diet and prescription medication taken daily to avoid heart attacks.
